Nancy Adelaide Vieira is a central figure in contemporary Cape Verdean music, celebrated for her crystalline voice and soulful interpretations of traditional genres. Born in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, in 1975, she was born into a family deeply involved in the independence struggle; her parents were members of the resistance movement alongside Amílcar Cabral. Following Cape Verde’s independence in 1975, her family moved to Praia on the island of Santiago, and later to Mindelo. At age 14, she relocated to Lisbon when her father, Herculano Vieira, was appointed the Cape Verdean ambassador to Portugal.
While studying sociology and management at the University of Lisbon, Vieira’s musical career began serendipitously. She unexpectedly won a local song contest after humming along while accompanying a friend. This victory led to her debut album, Nôs Raça, in 1995. Her style is a sophisticated fusion of Cape Verdean morna and coladeira with diverse influences from Brazil, the Caribbean, and Portuguese fado.
Her career reached a global audience with the 2012 release of No Amá, which resonated with fans mourning the legendary Cesária Évora. She has since collaborated with prominent artists like Tito Paris and António Zambujo, and performed on international stages ranging from the United States to Angola.
